Walking through Kingsville during Migration Festival weekend is a unique experience. You'll see easels tucked into places you might normally pass without a second glance. Along the waterfront, near historic buildings, beside tree-lined streets, and overlooking colourful fields, artists are quietly at work. This is the annual Great Migration Paint Out, a four-day en plein air painting competition held in conjunction with the Town's Migration Festival activities that attracts artists from across North America each year.
There is something captivating about watching an artist work outdoors. You find yourself slowing down, lingering longer than you intended. It's incredible how differently each person views the exact same place. A familiar landscape can appear vibrant and whimsical through one artist's eyes, or calm and contemplative through another's. Places you've passed countless times suddenly feel new again.
As the weekend continues, families attending Migration Festival activities at Lakeside Park often pause to admire works in progress. The artists become part of the experience itself, creating a living gallery spread throughout the community.
By Sunday afternoon, many in the community are eager to see the finished results. The Great Migration Paint Out Show and Sale at the Grovedale Arts & Culture Centre features artwork created throughout the competition and offers visitors the chance to meet artists, view award-winning pieces, vote for the People's Choice Award, and purchase original artwork.
Walking into the gallery feels completely different from seeing the paintings take shape outdoors. The room is filled with colour, perspective, and stories. Familiar Kingsville landscapes, lake views, rural roads, heritage buildings, and hidden corners of town are reimagined through the eyes of talented artists.
More than 400 people attended this year's Show and Sale to view and purchase artwork, enjoy appetizers and live music, and celebrate as award winners were recognized.
The Great Migration Paint Out isn't just an art competition. It's a chance to see Kingsville through a different lens. For a few days each autumn, the town becomes both gallery and subject, inspiring artists and visitors to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us every day.
